The Town of Amalfi
Amalfi is the town that gives the name to the one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. The villages on the Amalfi coast are located along the dramatic coastline and are all connected by the breathtaking Amalfi Drive. Arriving by the sea, the town of Amalfi rises with its tightly packed villas and palaces seeming to tumble down the cliff-side into the fishing port and shingle beach below.
The beauty of southern Italy’s Amalfi Coast is legendary and has inspired artists, writers, and illustrious musicians such as Richard Wagner and it’s little wonder why: just admiring the vibrant, village-strewn cliffs jut into the sea is a clear reason why. During the summer, notes of lemon hang in the air and festivals enliven hamlets along the drive from the Bay of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno, making it the ideal time to travel to the Amalfi Coast.
Amalfi, romantically situated at the mouth of a deep gorge, is the Amalfi Coast’s largest town, but it is still small enough to feel intimate. It is also a convenient base for excursions to Capri and to the famous Grotta dello Smeraldo. Amalfi’s Duomo is also very impressive and not to be missed.
